Mother Sea – Monterey Bay Aquarium

As I was looking through the footage from a recent trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, my mind kept going back to the lovely opening title sequence of Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo.  Using the same music (by longtime Miyazaki collaborator Joe Hisaishi), I decided to create this brieft homage, showcasing some of the absolutely stunning sea creatures on display at the aquarium.

Monarch Grove

This is a very brief video snapshot of the annual monarch butterfly migration to Pismo Beach, California.  There were around 30,000 butterflies in the grove on the day of filming, although the numbers can sometimes reach much higher than that.

Edited in Premiere Pro and graded in After Effects.  Music is “Gymnopedia No. 3” by Erik Satie, performed by Kevin MacLeod at incompetech.com.

Low Tide

This is a short video I put together of the incredible sea creatures that inhabit the tidal pools on California’s central coast.

Photographed using a Canon T3i at Coralina Cove in Montaña de Oro State Park.  Music, once again, by Kevin MacLeod  at incompetech.com.

Time Remapping: Sword Dance

I created this video in order to explore time-based effects and remapping in Adobe After Effects.  Dance professor Er-Dong Hu gave this demonstration of a sword-based martial arts routine as part of a campaign film for Bucknell University.

Music by Alt-J.

Safe Harbor

This footage was shot on and around the “Big Indian Rock” on the Susquehanna River in Safe Harbor, Pennsylvania.  The rock is the site of thousand year-old Algonquin petroglyphs.

Photographed using the Canon 5D Mark III.  Music by Kevin MacLeod over at incompetech.com.

strand

This 2011 experimental film was featured at the Fine Cuts exhibition and Mega Media Showcase in New York.  It combines traditional stop-motion animation with live-action video and digital noise.

Reve – Brave Rabbit

This short film was selected as one of the winners of the 2010 Ann Arbor Film Festival Sight + Sound competition, wherein filmmakers “visually scored” one of three pieces of music composed specifically for the event.  This particular track – Reve – was created by Roberto Kalb.

Gramps’ Big Day

In this stop-motion animated short film, Gramps’ sudden departure forces Sonny to reevaluate their relationship.  After years of mistreatment, will Gramps’ day finally arrive?

Co-directed with Kyle Emery, Gramps’ Big Day took the prize for best animated film at the 2005 Planet Ant Film & Video Festival.

The Snow Drift

Snowball fight!  This computer animation was created for the 2011 holiday season.

Weird Duck

This random bit of weirdness was my first foray into the world of 3D computer animation.  Modeling and animation were done in Autodesk Maya.

Climate Change Visualized

This short documentary explores information visualization as it relates to environmentalism.  Data was culled from the Google Analytics tools and sorted in various ways.

The Leaf Pile

An Autumn-themed 2006 short film set to Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings in C.

Kitsune

This is a 2009 short film composed of still images, or diaporama.  It is based on Japanese fox mythology and was filmed in the eucalyptus forests of Montaña de Oro State Park in California.

Friday the 13th, 1989

This spooky short was selected as one of the winners of the 2006 Halloween movie contest on GameTrailers.com.  I’ve always found the Friday the 13th NES game to be deeply unsettling.

The Gnome Wins Again

A quick and silly 2011 short film.  This began as a still photography narrative; the stills were animated together into a video sequence as an afterthought.
